Urinary Tract Management "Urine Trouble Now"
Thursday 11 September 2025
7.00PM: Drinks, nibbles & mingling | 7.30PM: Talk commences
Holistic Vets, 56 Fraser Street, Tauranga, Tauranga
Description
Ever had that ‘sinking feeling’ about the waterworks? (In the patient, of course)! Most of us see patients with urinary tract trauma from time to time, but if we work for long enough it is likely that we will also see cases where there is an iatrogenic component. Ruth Youmans will discuss urinary tract trauma management in general, but will also discuss some of the surprisingly common pitfalls that can cause us grief when managing the urinary tract. The emphasis will be on practical ‘in house’ management and prevention strategies rather than on specialist interventions so feel free to bring along your case questions!
Speaker
Dr Ruth Youmans
Ruth is a Massey graduate and was lucky enough to start her career as a surgery intern there for two years. Thereafter, she worked in a busy Papatoetoe small animal practice for six years, which only served to consolidate her passion for surgery and desire to specialise, so Membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Surgeons was her next goal. This helped Ruth secure a residency in small animal surgery at the University of Sydney in the late ‘90s, which culminated in a Masters thesis on portosystemic shunts and later with Ruth passing the college Fellowship exams in small animal surgery just before the turn of the century. In 2000, Ruth was registered as a specialist in small animal surgery and worked until 2003 in a referral practice in South Auckland. In 2003, Ruth and her husband opened The Small Animal Surgeon and were kept very busy seeing referral cases from premises in Papakura until 2023, when the opportunity to work at ARC with other specialists and 24-hour care became too attractive! Ruth enjoys both soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, is still a self-confessed ‘surgery nerd’ and still gets a kick out of how the field of small animal surgery constantly advances and improves.
