Learning outcome

Clinical Stream: Lower urinary tract disease is a frequent cause for presentation to veterinary practices of both dogs and cats. This Clinical Stream will explore advances made within recent years around understanding of pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of common causes of lower urinary tract signs including bacterial cystitis, subclinical bacteriuria, urolithiasis and idiopathic/stress cystitis. The role of nutrition in both development and treatment of disease will be explored and new therapeutic options discussed. 

Attendees who choose the Clinical Stream will come away from the Vet Symposium gaining a deeper understanding into the advances in pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of Lower Urinary Tract Disease and the role of nutrition in the management and treatment of these diseases. 

Business Stream: This Business Stream will feature two presentations - Thriving in Tough Times: Strategic Skill-Building for Enduring Veterinary Success and It’s Right Under Your Nose: Unlocking Growth During Economic Contraction. 

Attendees who choose the Business Stream, will come away from a powerful session led by the Lincoln Institute of Veterinary Business, with an understanding go the proven paths to lasting business growth and career satisfaction. Designed for business owners, managers and clinicians, these presentations are designed to impart practical strategies that will support professional and commercial success even in the face of uncertain economic times.

Speaker

Dr Mary Thompson - BVSc (Hons), PhD, DACVIM, MANZCVS, FHEA
Mary graduated from the University of Sydney and worked in small animal practice in Sydney before completing a rotating internship and residency in small animal internal medicine at Washington State and Purdue universities. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Mary has spent the last 20 years working in clinical academic roles at Australian universities; The University of Queensland, where she completed her PhD, Murdoch University, where she was Academic Chair of the DVM program, and currently as an Associate Professor in Small Animal Medicine at The University of Sydney. Her major area of clinical and research interest is lower urinary tract disease in dogs and cats, and she greatly enjoys working with junior veterinary colleagues during their studies.

Dr Niquet Reid - BVSc BVMS GPCert (FelP) MANZCVS (Feline Medicine)
Dr Niquet Reid is a Scientific Services Veterinarian with Royal Canin based in Perth, Western Australia.  With a passion for cat medicine, she achieved membership to the ANZCVS in the field of Feline Medicine in 2022.  In addition to her role with Royal Canin, Niquet is also involved in managing cases for radio-iodine treatment of feline hyperthyroidism in Perth. 

Dr Natalie Courtman - BVSc MVS MANZCVS GCUT DipACVP
Associate Professor Natalie Courtman is a specialist veterinary clinical pathologist at the University of Sydney. Natalie graduated from the University of Sydney many years ago and spent nine years in small animal practices in Australia and the UK before embarking on her clinical pathology career. Her passion for continuing professional development led to a Masters from Murdoch University and memberships of the ANZCVS in small animal medicine and pathobiology, and she became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in clinical pathology in 2012. Natalie has extensive experience working in private diagnostics as well as academia. She has been involved in a diverse range of research projects including coagulation, clinical biochemistry, cytology and oncology, assay validation and reference interval studies across a range of species.

Dr Michael Powell - BVSc (Hons)
Michael Powell is a veterinarian, business thought-leader and a company director at Lincoln Institute of Veterinary Business. A practitioner with over 30 years’ experience and a former owner of a multiple award-winning ASAV Hospital of Excellence, Michael’s professional passion and focus now lies in provision of empowering education and support of veterinary professionals around the world. Since 2011, his company has been shaping an even brighter future for the veterinary industry through evidence-based training and support.  Michael is a researcher, industry advocate and highly regarded international speaker on the subjects of non-technical competency development, organisational leadership and strategic business management.
