Workshop: Avian First Aid

Learning objectives

The workshop is an extension of the talks given by Elizabeth Thomas and Emma Chen. The workshop will include the following:

  1. Avian Physical Exam and species specific considerations (Human and patient H&S)
  2. Crop tubing (on cadavars), get attendees to practice this technique and examine the bird's oral anatomy. 
  3. Using different types of crop tubes e.g. metal vs rubber and when to use them and what for what species.
  4. Bandaging: Fig-8 and wing body bandages.
  5. Intubate cadavars and familiarise with avian ET tubes.
  6. The opportunity to discuss avian related questions with seasoned wildlife vets and to get a feel for the equipment used in avian medicine and surgery.
  7. Introduction to 10 month long graduate certificate in avian wildlife health

Cost
The workshop is complimentary but you must be registered for the 2025 Wildlife Conference for Friday 31 October 2025.

The workshop is limited to 15 registrations.

Transport

We will be walking from the conference venue to the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital, a distance of 1.7 km. For attendees with mobility impairments who are unable to walk this distance, transport will be available for 4–8 people. Please let NZVA know if you require transport.
